“Christ’s Hand” by Maggie Davis

There was a story about a girl who got a kite for her birthday. She excitedly went to the beach to try it out.

She got the kite high in the air. As she let more and more string out, the kite went higher and higher.

But then she had a thought—why not let go of the string? Surely then, the kite would fly even higher still, higher than it ever could go while tethered.

So she let go.
And the kite fell.

I thought of this story when I read D&C 20:7 “God ministered unto [Joseph] and gave unto him commandments which inspired him.”

Isn’t that beautiful?
That is what commandments can do—inspire us.

What at first glance might seem like a tether is actually the means of taking us to new heights that we could never get to on our own.

Or, as President Monson said, “When we keep the commandments, our lives will be happier, more fulfilling, and less complicated.”

And while we will inevitably to get our line “entangled again in the vanities of the world” (D&C 20:5), Christ is like the wind that unceasingly seeks to lift us out and up.

Because ultimately, it is the wind, not the string, that lifts a kite up.

Keep holding on, friends.
And expect to be lifted.
