“What wings are to a bird, and sails are to a ship, so prayer is to the soul”

Remember learning about Venn Diagrams in school? It’s two different, overlapping circles, with the intersection in the middle being the part they have in common.
I like to think of prayer in the context of a Venn Diagram: me as one circle and God as the other, prayer being what pushes my circle closer to His.
Creating more and more intersection until one day, the Venn diagram becomes just a circle—my will perfectly aligned with the Father’s.
The Bible Dictionary entry on prayer says, “prayer is the act by which the will of the Father and the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other.”
Moses 7 is a beautiful example of this.
Enoch asks God, “How is it that thou canst weep?”
God shows Enoch His children’s wickedness.
Then, “as Enoch saw this, he […] wept, and said: I will refuse to be comforted.”
Suddenly, when before Enoch didn’t understand, now they weep together, their wills coming closer to one, the intersection growing.
The Lord then takes an opportunity to align and teach more, saying “Lift up your heart, and be glad; and look.”
So, Enoch looks. And his mind rests on Christ’s second coming. “And his soul rejoiced.”
He realizes, he COULD be comforted, through the Savior. And the intersection grew.
The next time he wept, Enoch did something different. Instead of refusing to be comforted, he cried to the Lord “in the name of thine Only Begotten, even Jesus Christ, that thou wilt have mercy upon Noah and his seed.”
In his sorrow, Enoch looked to Christ.
He could weep while still having hope and creating change.
God then covenants with Enoch that he will stay the floods (Moses 7:51).
And the intersection of wills became even closer to aligning.
As Elder Kevin Pearson said, “Prayer is not a negotiation process, but an alignment process. […] Prayer is less about changing our circumstance and more about changing us. […] When we align our will with Heavenly Father’s will, answers and spiritual power will flow more freely.”
Two wills becoming one as we align ourselves to God in prayer.
Prayer brings power,
change,
and alignment.
Helping us become the people God wants us to be.
