There was once a young man who made his high school football team, but barely...he was the fourth of four quarterbacks.
On the last game of the season, he was resigned to the fact that he would never enter a game, and so he took his shoes off on the bench, wrapped himself in a blanket, and sat to watch the game.
Then, partway through the game, the coach called his name. The boy’s stomach dropped. He had no time to put on his shoes and no way to explain a delay.
So he ran onto the field with his white socks on—his lack of preparation plainly apparent to his teammates, coach, and the fans.
He was so preoccupied that he forgot what play he called and went the opposite direction of his teammates, getting tackled by linemen.
He later said, “No one expected me to make a touchdown. Even running the wrong way was understandable. But there was no excuse for a quarterback without shoes.”
Doctrine and Covenants 1:12 states, “Prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is nigh.”
The Lord is nigh—
What are we doing on the bench?
Are we wrapping ourselves in a blanket of false security and kicking off our gospel shoes to relax?
Or do we have our gospel shoes on, ready for our name to be called.
Ready, as Paul said, to “stand, having … your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Eph. 6:14–15).
Because “it is easier to prepare and prevent than to repair and repent.” (Ezra Taft Benson)
